Spinodal Superlattices of Topological Insulators

چکیده
Spinodal decomposition is proposed for stabilizing self-assembled interfaces between topological insulators (TIs) by combining layers of iso-structural and iso-valent TlBiX2 (X = S, Se, Te) materials. The composition range for gapless states is addressed concurrently to the study of thermodynamically driven boundaries. By tailoring composition, the TlBiS2−TlBiTe2 system might produce both spinodal superlattices and two-dimensional eutectic microstructures, either concurrently or separately. The dimensions and topological nature of the metallic channels are determined by following the spatial distribution of the charge density and the spin-texture. The results validate the proof of concept for obtaining spontaneously forming twodimensional TI-conducting channels embedded into three-dimensional insulating environments without any vacuum interfaces. Since spinodal decomposition is a controllable kinetic phenomenon, its leverage could become the long-sought enabler for effective TI technological deployment.

Moiré superlattices at the topological insulator Bi2Te3
We report on the observation of complex superlattices at the surface of the topological insulator Bi2Te3. Scanning tunneling microscopy reveals the existence of two different periodic structures in addition to the Bi2Te3 atomic lattice, which is found to strongly affect the local electronic structure. These three different periodicities are interpreted to result from a single small in-plane rot...
متن کاملSuperlattice valley engineering for designer topological insulators
A topological insulator is a novel state of quantum matter, characterized by symmetry-protected Dirac interfacial states within its bulk gap. Tremendous effort has been invested into the search for topological insulators. To date, the discovery of topological insulators has been largely limited to natural crystalline solids. Therefore, it is highly desirable to tailor-make various topological s...
متن کاملEnhancement of surface photocurrents in topological insulators using magnetic superlattices
The gapless surface states of topological insulators (TI) can potentially be used to detect and harvest low-frequency infrared light. Nonetheless, it was shown that significant surface photocurrents due to light with frequency below the bulk gap are rather hard to produce. Here we demonstrate that a periodic magnetic pattern added to the surface dramatically enhances surface photocurrents in TI...
متن کاملBloch–Zener Oscillations in Graphene and Topological Insulators
We show that superlattices based on zero-gap semiconductors such as graphene and mercury telluride exhibit characteristic Bloch–Zener oscillations that emerge from the coherent superposition of Bloch oscillations and multiple Zener tunneling between the electron and hole branch. We demonstrate this mechanism by means of wave packet dynamics in various spatially periodically modulated nanoribbon...
